Florida remains immensely popular due to its wonderful combination of beaches, tropical weather, and the enormous diversity of activities. I experienced this myself during my trip, especially on the west coast. For instance, St. Pete Beach is the ideal destination to relax on expansive, white sandy beaches. And at the same time, the bustling city of Tampa is just a half-hour drive away. Enjoy!

The Don CeSar

If you love exclusive accommodations, St. Pete Beach will amaze you. Take The Don CeSar, the gigantic pink castle that towers over everything as soon as you cross the bridge to the beach. Upon check-in, you’re greeted with a glass of bubbly. It’s incredibly convenient that all your luggage is taken to your room by the staff. It’s absolutely worth choosing a sea-view room at The Don CeSar. I predict you won’t get bored at this resort anytime soon. To begin with, there is a diverse range of boutique shops. Additionally, you can completely unwind in the spa or keep fit in the large gym. There’s even the possibility to take fitness classes, such as aqua fitness, yoga, or dance lessons on the beach, as well as group classes in the gym. There’s also plenty for the taste buds to enjoy. You’ll find an award-winning restaurant, Maritana, where all dishes are prepared with products sourced exclusively from local farmers and fishermen.

John’s Pass Village

You might just run into a group of local fishermen from Maritana at John’s Pass Village. On this old, wooden pier, you’ll see countless fishing boats on one side and a delightful array of cozy shops, restaurants, and cafes on the other. Many boat tours depart from the pier, so you’ll almost always see some themed boats docked, including a pirate ship. Curious? John’s Pass Village is located at Madeira Beach, a fifteen-minute drive north of St. Pete Beach.

Bustling Tampa

Depending on where you’re staying along the coast and how busy the roads are, you can reach the bustling downtown of Tampa in 30 to 45 minutes. It’s teeming with trendy restaurants and cafes. A must-visit if you love walking: The Tampa Riverwalk. This is a walking route of over four kilometers along the Tampa River, leading you past many of the city’s landmarks. If you start at the lively Heights Market at Armature Works, continue to Curtis Hixon Park, and end your walk on the terrace at Sparkman Wharf.

In the evening, the Riverwalk is beautifully illuminated with various colors!

Islamorada

Islamorada has a tropical atmosphere and is especially known for sport fishing. In this “Sport Fishing Capital of the World,” tuna fishing is a popular activity. From the small harbor at Whale Harbor, you can embark on various fishing trips. There are also many opportunities for diving or snorkeling, and you can visit the Indian Key Historic State Park, which is only accessible by boat. Have lunch or dinner at one of the cozy restaurants at Morada Bay. And if you want to learn all about marine life in the Florida Keys, pay a visit to the Theater of the Sea.

The Spaniards called this small island the “purple island” (Isla Morada) because of the purple sea snails found on the beach. The island is particularly renowned for sport fishing. In this “Sport Fishing Capital of the World,” tuna fishing is a key attraction, and the ultimate trophy is the Florida Marlin, a spearfish with a large spear-like snout. From the small harbor at Whale Harbor, you can take fishing trips. Deep-sea fishing enthusiasts will also find plenty of opportunities here. There are many options for diving and snorkeling, and you can visit the Indian Key Historic State Park, which is only accessible by boat.

Clearwater Beach & St. Pete Beach in Florida

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach, located on the west coast of Florida, is renowned for its pristine, white sandy beaches stretching up to 50 meters wide. Beautiful uninhabited islands dot the coast, with Caladesi Island being one of the most unique, offering glimpses of dolphins and serving as a truly untouched paradise. Additionally, Clearwater is home to a picturesque promenade along the beach, lined with numerous terraces exuding vibrant ambiance. Just a bit north, near Crystal River, time seems to stand still. Especially in the winter (the best season), visitors can swim with manatees, the gentle giants that inhabit these waters, under the guidance of a knowledgeable guide.

Clearwater is also home to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a remarkable facility dedicated to rehabilitating injured marine animals and releasing them back into the wild whenever possible. The aquarium gained fame as the filming location for “Dolphin Tale,” a movie based on the true story of a dolphin that lost its tail to fishing nets and was fitted with a prosthetic one. The film draws parallels between the dolphin and war veterans who have lost limbs, captivating the imagination of visitors, particularly children with prosthetics, who come from all over the country to visit. Watching the movie beforehand is highly recommended.

St. Pete Beach

Together with Tampa, St. Petersburg forms the second-largest metropolitan area in Florida. Both cities are situated along Tampa Bay. Affectionately referred to as “St. Pete” by locals, the area is home to 2.8 million residents. St. Pete Beach has it all: pristine white sandy beaches, charming souvenir shops at John’s Pass Village, and a vibrant downtown area. During the day, downtown St. Petersburg is a haven for museum enthusiasts, while evenings transform the city into a lively destination with rooftop bars, restaurants, and jazz clubs.

Cultural highlights include the Salvador Dali Museum, boasting the largest collection of Dali’s works outside of Spain, housed in an impressive building with beautiful gardens. The Morean Arts Center, showcasing modern art from local and international artists, is another must-visit. Part of the Morean Arts Center is the Chihuly Collection, featuring a series of breathtaking and unique glass creations by David Chihuly, a sight that is almost beyond imagination. Currently, there is an exhibition of his work in Groningen.

The iconic Don Cesar Resort is impossible to miss. As you approach St. Pete Beach, you’ll spot a pink castle from the Pinellas Bayway. In 1942, the US Army purchased the hotel for use as a hospital during World War II, later converting it into a recuperation center for returning aviators. Today, it stands as a luxurious hotel offering unparalleled service and amenities, including two pools, a large private beach area with luxurious beach beds and cabanas, a fine restaurant, souvenir shop, fitness center, and spa. For those seeking an exceptional stay with a sense of history and atmosphere, this is The place to be.

Whether you’re seeking the serenity of St. Pete Beach, the luxury of The Don CeSar, the charm of John’s Pass Village, or the vibrant energy of Tampa, Florida offers a perfect blend of city and beach experiences. From stunning sunsets on white sandy shores to the vibrant nightlife and cultural richness of the city, every moment spent here promises to be unforgettable.
